Spiritualism is merely the attempted communication with the Spirit World, which allegedly involves getting guidance from the souls of 'departed spirits.' Normally when we think of Spiritualism, we imagine people sitting in a circle having a seance. In the ancient Egyptian and Babylonian Religious belief system, one's spirit supposedly went up to 'occupy' a star at time of death. Then these spirits, now residing in the stars and planets, supposedly controlled the fate of those who were still living upon the earth. Whatever position that the planets held- in relation to the Sun -was the determining factor of what people on earth could expect to happen in their future. Therefore the New Age Movement, which is based on Astrology, actually has its foundation in Spiritualism, or 'communication with the Spirit World'. New Age believers imagine that the information they have received concerning the planet's alignment, (which they believe to be an indication that we are living in the 'Aquarian Age') -actually came from the Spirit World! The only difference is that in its old form, Spiritualism, consisting merely in having a Medium who attempted to contact the souls of the departed, would bring forth some 'message of wisdom' from the spirits. These 'messages of wisdom' brought forth through the Medium were then to be used by the living as guidance throughout their lives. My, how things have changed! In the New Age Religion we find a much more sophisticated form of Spiritualism, involving at times, a Clairvoyant Medium or Channeler who claims to contact the 'Great Masters'. These 'Great Intelligences' of the Universe supposedly then instruct the Medium on how to carry forward the 'Grand Plan' that they have had for all of mankind throughout the Ages. Presumably, the Great Masters are they who have gone through many incarnations (reincarnation involves the fact that the dead do not die, but have immortal souls) and have finally 'evolved' into some sort of 'Ultra God-Beings'. After this arduous process, they are then qualified to instruct the living. These New Age Channelers even claim to contact Jesus Christ, the Buddha, Mohammed, and others who they see as Great Teachers of the past, in an effort to bring forth 'exalted wisdom' from those Entities that will then serve as instruction for all of mankind.
Often, we see pictures of the moon or the sun with a humanlike face drawn upon it, because the Ancients believe that deceased souls really didn't die, but that they instead, literally went up to reside in the sun, moon, and stars. They also believed that kings and other nobility who had died went up into the solar system to resume their existence. In fact, Spiritualism is where the idea of 'wishing upon a star' came from. Do you really believe that a star can hear you wishes and grant your requests? Of course not! But the ancients believed that the Immortal Souls who resided in those stars could! The most alarming thing by far is that Spiritualism, now changing its form, and veiling some of its more objectionable features: "Spiritualism is assuming a Christian guise... Even in its present form, so far from being more worthy of toleration than formerly, Spiritualism is really more dangerous, because a more subtle, deception. While it formerly denounced Christ and the Bible, it now professes to accept both." Ellen White, Great Controversy pg 556.
